Barn Loft
Newfield, NY 2019
The homeowners had been living in the upstairs of a converted pole barn for 13 years, and asked myself and my partner to come up with some ideas to transform the space into a bright, airy, loft-like home.

Before
Originally, there were walls separating the main room from two rows of alcoves on the sides. There were skylights in these orginal alcoves, but light from them did not enter the main space. The main space felt a bit dark and cramped.

Design
Once the walls were removed, we reconfigured the bedroom and office, added two more french doors and four windows to bring more light into the space. Custom cabinets along the office windows took up minimal space but offered enough storage and mantle-space that a lot of the old furniture could be retired, aiding in opening and freeing the air in the room. The kitchen area was left untouched other than cosmetics, although there was some ideas thrown around about the storage area behind the refrigerator.
Should the inhabitants, either the owners or airbnb guests, want to close off a separate area, they can pull a set of curtains closed. These curtains still allow all the light from the new windows to stream in while offering a bit of privacy.
The room now feels bigger, brighter, and refreshing.
